The Regions Hospital Family Birth Center in downtown St. Paul is a 160,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art healthcare facility designed to provide a supportive, family-centered environment for labor, delivery, and postpartum care. Developed in close collaboration with HealthPartners and clinical staff, the center reflects a progressive approach to maternity care, featuring enhanced couplet care rooms that allow mothers and newborns to remain together—even in higher-acuity situations—along with a Level II NICU and dedicated education and simulation spaces. The design prioritizes comfort, inclusivity, and cultural sensitivity, incorporating calming interiors, multilingual wayfinding, and wellness-focused amenities to support both patients and staff.
To meet the project’s demanding performance requirements, Erie Architectural Partners, a YKK AP America company, collaborated closely with W.L. Hall Company, BWBR, and Kraus-Anderson Construction to deliver a custom unitized curtain wall system engineered for exceptional structural and thermal performance. Through an intensive design-assist process—including weekly coordination meetings—the team developed a cost-efficient facade solution that achieved the desired architectural aesthetic without compromising performance. Numerous value-engineering strategies were implemented to control costs while maintaining design intent, resulting in a streamlined installation process with minimal punch-list items and early project completion.
The high-performance facade contributes to a welcoming, light-filled environment that enhances patient comfort and supports healing, while ensuring long-term durability in Minnesota’s challenging climate. The Regions Hospital Family Birth Center exemplifies how integrated collaboration and advanced facade engineering can deliver innovative healthcare environments that prioritize both performance and human experience.
